Research facilities to
fabricate fiber optic Bragg sensors have been developed to support measurement of strain, temperature and hydrogen on the NASA's X-33 and Shuttle fuel tanks
and other NASA programs. Since the requirements for these sensors exceeded standard fiber sensors, a custom facility was established in the NESB branch of Langley Research Center in Hampton Virginia. Process engineering was developed to fabricate Polyimide jacketed fiber with multiple Bragg sensors embedded, on-the-fly. Modifications to the tower were developed and custom equipment designed and integrated on the tower to mark the location of each sensor. This was established to aid field installation of the fiber sensor assembly. Automated tooling was developed to mount phase mask and beam conditioning optics inside tower cabinet. |
