December 1983: Milfred E. Thomas, a
manufacturing engineer, founded MET Engineering in Santa Barbara, CA. to bridge the
gap between R&D and commercialization.
MET Engineering's goal is to help private companies, research institutes or Government
agencies shorten the product development cycle and minimize the cycle's cost.
Organizations can then bring profit-making products to market quicker than the typical 6
to 8 month product development cycle. In addition, the hassle of hiring additional
personnel or reassigning current staff for product development can be avoided.
In August of 1992 MET Engineering was relocated to Hampton Virginia, a city with more high-technology opportunities,
better air quality and a general improvement in the quality of life can be realized.

|
- Patend Pending 2002: Process patent for molding a
fixed value attenuation into an optical fiber, ITT Cannon.
- February 2001: Received the ITT Industries E3 award
for invaluable contributions toward developing PHD (high density fiber optic telecom
products).
- September 1984: MET Engineering invented and marketed
the first inspection system for
intra-ocular lenses (IOL's). In addition, the first program was developed by MET
Engineering to allow feasibility studies of CO2 laser manufacturing of IOL's.
- May 1995: MET Engineering introduced CeramountTM
the first all-ceramic kinematic mounts for use in laser resonators. This ceramic material
was made by a net-shape casting process developed in a cooperative effort with NASA
Langley Research Center and Precision Ceramics of Richmond, VA.
- June 1994: MET Engineering created the PolymountTM product line, polyurethane optical mounting
components that are one third the cost of conventional aluminum components.
- The photograph is a double exposure of the platform portion of
the Bragg fiber fixture producing and
calibrating precisely spaced multiple transverse holographic gratings in optical
fibers. United States Patent #5,552,882/Sept. 3, 1996.
- Hampton University Research Center of Optical Physics
Atmospheric research professor Dr. Thomas Chyba contracted MET Engineering to design and
manage fabrication of a portable
optical receiver for measurements of gases such as methane and or water vapor. This
portable receiver utilized a 17" diameter Cassagrain telescope mounted on a channel.
MET Engineering designed the frame, wormdrive system, optical receiver breadboard and
various custom mounting hardware to achieve the desired results.
